Michigan and Mother Nature are full of surprises, aren’t they? One day you are enjoying a beautiful 80° with lots of sunshine and the next day you are wiping the snow from your windshield. We may not have sharks, but we do have tornadoes, hail, thunderstorms, heavy rain, flooding and excessive heat. Mother Nature loves to play with the mitt.

Severe weather in Michigan

There are many types of storms we encounter in Michigan and most fall into one of five categories:

1. Snowstorms: Shovel, dump, shovel, dump. A Michiganian’s winter mantra. We’re used to it, but for some reason half the state forgets how to drive after the first of the year.

2. Hailstorms: chunks of ice falling from the sky? Check. Most states fear these types of systems simply because they fear their car will be dented.

3. Ice storms: Buy bread, bottled water and batteries, as there is a higher than average chance of losing power and showering at a truck stop.

5. Tornadoes: We call our severe weather horns “tornado sirens”. When those sirens go off, parents in Michigan will tell their kids to go to the basement and turn on the radio…while they’re going to stand in front of the lawn, hands on their hips, looking looking for a funnel cloud.

Before you do what we all do, which is open your mouth and outwardly challenge mother nature in Michigan to outdo herself, stop. Don’t say it, don’t think it, or Mitten State might just use its giant hand to crush us with a little time.
